GLOBAL SOUTH CENTER:
The aim of the Global South Center is to create strong linkages amongst scholars,
activists, and artists, and, to facilitate learning, exchange and action among those working for social and political transformation. Located in New York City and Brooklyn, and linked with people and struggles across the Global North and South, we propose projects that deepen our connections to each other. Experimenting with alternative world-making practices and promoting interdisciplinary research that supports living systems, we richly critique and carefully work against the devastating effects of capitalism. Our research, projects, and events aim to understand the forces that maintain exploitative conditions. We focus on the alternative formations that differently inhabit and imagine possibilities of co-existence on the planet.
Conventional definitions of the Global South focus on the geographical regions of Latin America, Africa, Asia and Oceania and sometimes include the Arab world and so-called less developed nations as well as diasporas originating in these parts of the world. We offer an additional conceptualization, one that extends theories, ideas, and practices to think from the undervalued perspectives and ways of organizing social life that emerge from submerged perspectives and communities. Therefore, we focus on comparative, relational, and transversal forms of study, relations, and active interdependence. We also recognize that there are entire ways of life that are marginalized or are excluded from global centers of power, and our work is not to bring these forms “into visibility,” but to nourish and support the making of otros mundos, or other worlds.
